The Voice Of The Past: An Interview with Setenay Uruç

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your education and your interest in cinema.

My name is Setenay Uruc. I was born in Istanbul, Turkey. I received training in theater, performing arts and creative drama. I continue my academic education in the field of art history and sociology. My interest in film started as a screenwriter.

Seeing and reading what works aroused your interest in this medium, and as a result, what works do you owe your education in cinema to?

First of all, I can say that Tim Burton is in the first place. But outside of the movie world, C.G. All of JUNG's and Joseph Campell's books on mythology made me choose cinema and especially authorship.

Tell us about your first project. What difficulties did you have in the beginning?

It is very important to know the history well, as the subject of the first film experience is based on the Sumerians and the Epic of Gilgamesh. For this, I have been doing great and deep research for the last five years. I got my academic advisory from Muazzez İlmiye Çığ. He is a respected sumerologist in Turkey. The more you have control over a subject, the more free you will be.

I did not encounter any difficulties, but I can say that we had fun times with the film's crew.

Is it more important to have a budget, or to have the mind to find salvation solutions in critical situations?

Good question. but I think finding solutions helps to be better organized.

Do you think film festivals help filmmakers?

Yes, definitely. Film festivals allow you to see the film from a different perspective. Any criticism of the film makes a great contribution to the director.

Tell us about film production companies. Can one, as an inquisitive filmmaker, count on production companies?

I think filmmakers can be trusted. We're all right to be skeptical, but luck is also an important factor. Not rushing, thinking calmly and being sure of what we do will bring the person together with the right producer.

How much of the future of cinema do you think is in the hands of powerful companies like Netflix?

I think the future of cinema depends on the era we live in. The sector in which each period shines is different. As the modern world continues to evolve, the options will continue to increase.

Is cinema, as some say, dead, and should we expect television and Internet broadcasts to be gaining more and more power?

Cinema is a magical world. The starting point of every idea is cinema. The world of television and the internet offers very easy options to people. but which one can give the real feeling that cinema gives?

What skills do you think a filmmaker needs to have? Is it necessary for the filmmaker to personally understand many specialized subfields?

Yes, it's necessary for the filmmaker to personally understand many specialized subfields. because if he doesn't get it, people can't feel the movie right. Each of us sends messages to one another through movies. It's the real feelings that matter.

Tell us about your next project, please.

I am writing the script of the feature film about Gilgamesh. I am preparing a short film that I want to tell about the Vegan and Vegan theme. I defend that every living thing belongs to equal rights and I want to prevent them from suffering. Film will be the right tool for me to reach other people. It will be a film about a day spent on earth through the eyes of one of the most exploited animals.
